King's Brief for the Prosecution of Elad for Attempted Manslaughter of Afel

In the month of Tempest in the year 243, the Mage Raq and the Thief Afel spent some time adventuring together. Afel seemed to have developed some feelings toward Raq and was emotionally hurt when he learned that Raq was in love with the Cleric Elad. A verbal argument evolved in which Afel even threatened to put a bounty on Raq's head.

A few days later, Elad heard about this and when he met Afel in the tavern, he attacked him using lethal means with the intent to kill Afel. Afel ran from the tavern and Elad followed.

Elad does not dispute the facts and there are several witnesses to the attacks. There was no personal insult for Afel's against Elad involved.

The Justicars recommend that Elad be punished for the attempt to kill Afel.

 ---=== Appendix: ===---

Most of the investigation of the Justicars has been done via the
service of the Royal Postal Office. We append a list of letters of
witnesses and defendants that corroborate our findings of facts:

Letter by Afel dated Tempest 30, 243
  (Afel's description of the events)
Letter by Elad dated Serenus 18, 243
(contains the confession of "brawling with Afel in the tavern")
Letter by Elad dated Serenus 19, 243
(specifying the word "brawling" by confessing "I attacked Afel")
Letter by Raq dated Serenus 20, 243
(describing the circumstances leading to the crime)
Letter by Amandia dated Serenus 23, 243
  (witnessing the crime)
Letter by Damieux dated Serenus 25, 243
  (witnessing the crime)
Letter by Fytheroc dated Solaria 19, 243
  (witnessing the crime)

These letters will be send to the Judge as pieces of evidence.

Judgment:

The defendant did not submit a defense brief to the Court. Consequently, he is found GUILTY AS CHARGED of the crime of Attempted Manslaughter of Afel. Not submitting a defense brief is seen by the Court as a lack of respect for the rules and regulations of the Justice system. Therefore, the defendant is found guilty of contempt of Court.

Sentence:

Elad is to pay a 32 orb fine, of which 2 orb are to be tithed to each Deity of the Aether. In addition to that, he is to pay a 5 orb retribution to Afel.

For Contempt of Court, Elad is to pay a 10 orb fine.

The fines and the retribution (total of 47 orb) are to be collected by a Justicar within three months after the publication of the Judgement. The Justicar will tithe the 32 orb and hand the 5 orb to Afel.

Failure to pay the fines will result in DEATH without a hearing.
