Resource gathering is done by way of a gathering skill which can be learned from Peeki or Foroni in Thrace City or Sable City. In order to gather a resource, you must have learned a resource gathering skill by either of the above NPCs AND have a resource gathering tool. The cost for learning a gathering skill is dependent upon your level and for the most part, the decision of your gathering skill is meant to be permanent. However, for a few ThreshCredits you can unlearn your current gathering skill and choose a new one.

Skill Nodes Basic Tool Command
furrier skins from critters skinning knife skin <node>
herbalist various plants gardening shears clip <node>
lumberjack trees and bushes bronze hatchet chop <node>
miner rocky outcroppings iron pick mine <node>

Characters of player level 8 and lower enjoy a bonus to their chance of gathering.

Like your guild and combat skills, the gathering skills are maxed at two times your player level. So if you are player level 10 you can raise your gathering skill to 20. Leveling your skills is automatic and is based on random chance. Every time you successfully gather a resource, and if you aren't already maxed, your chance to level your skill increases (if you are extremely unlucky, it is conceivable that you could increase your chance to 100% at which point the game will grudgingly and without any choice in the matter grant you that skill point it has been holding out on you, but random is random and you could also just as conceivably get that skill point on the very next gather after already skilling up). Buffs allow you to have a higher gathering skill than you have trained, however, the formula for raising your skill is based on your actual skill level and not your buffed skill level.

You are not automatically guaranteed success when gathering. All the resources have a difficulty which can be mitigated to zero depending on your skill. You can tell your chances of successfully gathering a node by looking at it. If you've been trained to gather that node, a message will show up telling you what to expect. If the arrow is bold green with them message "Have fun gathering the splendors of this natural resource." then you will not skill up on this plant UNLESS you are benefiting from a buff which artificially raises your skill to that success rate, in which case the standard chances to level up apply.
