A non-living creature is an item in the game that has been coded in the likeness of a creature, however, it does not contain any of the properties of an actual living being. Non-living creatures are items and cannot respond to the attack command, xa command, or any other general command you could use to interact with a living creature without special, customized code support to allow it. Items, often pets, are coded in this way as to make them portable, meaning that you can carry them around in your inventory.

This is, however, trivial and completely out of character information and is presented here only to clarify what this means, as in character, you should treat them as living creatures.
