Once every month or so, ThresholdRPG reboots. During a reboot, all gear and RP storage is cleared out, including personal, guild, and temple. Some storage is not cleared, though it is the general rule that equipment is lost after a reboot.
The purpose of a reboot is to clean up the game and begin afresh. Part of this clean up is the aforementioned gear wipe. This is by design and it is also why gear is more powerful than it ought to be. If gear persisted longer than it did, it would be weaker and be more challenging to obtain. As it is, with short reboot cycles, players enjoy a relatively quick and easy gearing-up experience.
Reboots are not generally announced in advance to protect the in-game economy.
My name is King Borgia, King of Kings; Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. No fortress stands. Around the silent stones Of that vast ruin, broken, cold, and bare, The ash gray wastes of Threshold stretch away.
