Welcome new adventurer! The goal of this file is to provide some helpful insight into some of the aspects of adventuring in ThresholdRPG.

Areas
When you first start out you'll probably want to visit the farm south of Sable City and/or the gingerbread house north of Sable City. Both locations can be found in help newbieareas and it is worth noting that the directions contained therein use the Marble Fountain in the Center of Town as the starting point. Areas in Threshold are set for level ranges. This means that the foes found around the farm as well as the gingerbread house are not ALL easily defeatable by someone in heritage, and some are challenging up to level 5. Pick your fights wisely. If you're going to be defeated, simply leave in any direction you can to get away.

Related Topics
* newbie areas

Combat
Combat for a newcomer is pretty straight forward. You attack your foe and use your newbie spell until either you or your foe is dead. Once you join a guild you will have access to other abilities. As mentioned above, you should be wary of what you are fighting. Use the xa command frequently to determine your foe's condition as you progress through the fight. If you find that you are not really doing a lot of damage, your foe may simply be too strong for you. You should probably either eat food to heal up and keep trying or just run away. A lot of newcomers die frequently by not making use of these three very key things: xa, newbie and running away. You shouldn't have to eat a lot of food when you're just starting out. If you find that you are, then you should probably wait until you level a bit before returning to that kind of foe again.

Food
Food is a MAJOR part of regular adventuring life. Most people buy their food at [taverns], but a newcomer has the distinct advantage of being readily able to find free food all over the place. The farm has vegetables that litter the the ground while the gingerbread farm has fruit trees where you can pick fruit.

Gear
Make sure you're geared up before starting the killing! Wield your weapon, equip your armor. If you don't have any, you can find some in the newbie academy to the west of the Map Machine by typing "suit up". Also, adventurers regularly throw things into the heritage rooms, so check there if you've recently died and it's too soon to "suit up".
STEA
As always, the STEA is there to help and guide you through any questions you may have. Please feel free to ask on the heritage channel for assistance or visit the STEA offices by going up from the Map machine in the Adventurers Guild and typing "help me".

Good luck!!

There are 12 mortal races on Threshold. Each has its own attributes, special skills, preferences, and other characteristics. There is a help file for each.

Language
Common is the language that everyone speaks. It is easy to use, and it costs no spell points or energy to use. However, you also have a racial language (rsay) and this can only be understood by people that speak your
racial language (it costs 1 spell point per use, since you are out of practice!).

Racial Emotes
There are special emotes for every race. These emotes can be used in rooms, over channels, and in tells.

To see your racial emotes, type racialemotes.
Restricted Guilds
Some guilds are open to all while some are not. It is important to note that racial restrictions should not be discussed in terms of game mechanics. These restrictions exist to provide flavor. If everybody could just do everything, then it would be rather vanilla. Players should take this as an opportunity to roleplay these restrictions how they like, however, not in an overtly OOC, mechanical way.

Restrictions
* Amborel - Alchemist, Mage, Necromancer, Psion, Templar
* Asuli - Clerics, Paladins, Rangers, Warriors
* Canis - Alchemists, Necromancers, Psions, Templars (Psion templars are restricted and not mage templars, because mages can be canis.)
* Catfolk - Clerics
* Dryad - Necromancers
* Dwarf - Alchemists, Bards, Mages, Necromancers, Psions, Templars
* Gnome - Psions, Templars (Psion templars are restricted and not mage templars, because mages can be gnomes.)
* Salamae - Necromancers
* Scorpien - Alchemists, Bards, Mages, Necromancers, Templars (Mage templars are restricted and not psion templars, because psions can be scorpiens.)
* Takzul - Clerics, Paladins

Restricted Religions
Some religions do not allow certain races from joining; or rather some races refuse to join certain religions. Whatever the bent, players should not roleplay that it is merely a game mechanic that is preventing them from joining. There exists roleplay reason why this is the case and players should avoid lazy roleplay by saying "I cannot join because I'm a catfolk."

Prohibited Races
Characters are not permitted to roleplay being drow elf, a vampire, nor a dragon.
The life of the cleric is one of the most demanding and unique in the realm of Threshold. Sworn to advance the beliefs, ideas, power, and influence of its deity's mythos, the cleric is an ever vigilant epitome and paradigm of that which the chosen deity represents.

In the material world of mortals, the cleric speaks for and acts on behalf of his or her deity. In return, the deity grants the cleric with many varied and powerful spells. Their power depends heavily on the devoutness of the cleric, as well as the quality of continued service over many, many years.

This duty is demanding and rigorous. A cleric must be constantly mindful the deity's desires and wishes, and must always remain true to the values he or she is seeking to spread. The cleric must not only actively spread the word, but serve as a living, breathing example to everyone interacted with. Often, straying from the path can bring great punishment or even a loss of powers!

To pursue the life of the cleric, one must already show great wisdom in the ways of the word before any deity would waste its efforts on a such a mortal servant. For without wisdom, how can one's devotion be trusted? As for spells, the abilities of the cleric are quite varied. Aside from their well known (and appreciated) healing and resurrecting abilities, clerics have a wide array of defensive, combat, and information gathering spells. This guild is one that demands absolute devotion, and for such the rewards are great.

Symbol
A cleric can be recognized by their carried Periapt of Faith. This will change, however, once they become chosen by a deity and wear the symbol of that faith.
